What you do before your spray tan can be what makes the difference between an alright spray tan, and a fabulous spray tan! It's so important to prepare your skin for a sunless tan, that way the spray tanning solution can work properly.

Spray tanning solution only effects the top dead layer of your skin. Because of this good exfoliation is a huge factor in the result of your spray tan. You want a fresh, clean canvas for the solution to take to.  This will ensure a flawless, even fading sunless tan. It is also important to shave before your sunless tanning session.  Shaving after can cause your tan to fade faster.  When you go in for your spray tan, do not have any moisturizers, deodorant, or makeup on your skin.  These kinds of products can block the spray tan solution from absorbing.

Extraction fans will greatly increase the air quality of the air you and your clients are breathing.  Extraction fans suck up the spray tanning solution that is left in the air and pull it into a filter.  No more spray tan techs with bronzer in their noses!  Having extraction fans will also help to keep your tent or room a lot cleaner. They will greatly reduce the amount of over sprayed solution on your tent sides or walls!

Winter Glow

Tanning Attire

You would not believe how many people have no idea what to wear to their first spray tanning session! So many people are embarrassed to ask, so they come unprepared!

My recommendation is to wear whatever you are comfortable in! Many women wear bikini bottoms, or thong underwear.  Men wear briefs or boxers.  It really depends on the tan line (or lack there of) that you are looking for!  I also have disposable undergarments available to my spray tanning clients.  It's important to bring loose fitting dark clothing to wear home!  You don't want anything tight fitting that will rub away your new sunless tan!

Choosing the Right Solution

There are so many different kinds of spray tanning solutions!  How can you possibly know what products to use on what clients?!

The answer to this is really simple.  Use the right DHA level for your clients skin type, and you will never be disappointed!  Light skinned people, who are very sun sensitive should use original shade solutions.  These have the lowest levels of DHA.  Dark solutions can be used on most people, light to dark skinned, who tan fairly well.  Extra dark spray tanning solutions are best for clients who already have dark skin.  Extra dark is also great for clients who tan very well, or who's skin is used to spray tanning.  Remember that using a higher DHA level does not always mean you client will be darker! Orange tones or off color development happen from spraying someone too light with too dark of a solution!

Tricks for the Hands and Feet!

Hands and feet are probably the most difficult body parts to spray tan convincingly. You don't want them too dark, and you want them to fade into the arms and legs.  We've found a pretty good method to having natural looking spray tanned hands and feet.

Blend, blend, blend!  This will make the sunless tan less harsh.  Saturate a soft cloth with spray tan solution, and spray the hands.  Blend into the creases of the fingers, between the fingers, and into the wrist with the soft cloth dampened with solution.  Do the same with the feet, blending up into the ankle.  Have your client wash his or her hands a few hours after their spray tan to keep them from developing too dark!
