Using Booster Drops

You may have noticed that you have the option of adding booster drops to any spray tanning solution order.  What are they anyway?  Well booster drops contain a high concentration of DHA.  DHA is the ingredient in sunless tanning products that causes your skin to have the tan color.  When you add booster drops to your solution, you increase the level of DHA, creating a darker tan.

Booster drops are available in different size bottles and come in both bronze and clear.  You only have to add 5 drops per 2 oz of spray tanning solution to increase the DHA level 1%.  It's a great way to be able to customize your spray tanning solutions to your clients skin type!  Remember, adding too much DHA can cause off coloring rather than a darker natural looking tan.  Be sure to know your clients skin type before boosting the sunless tanning solution!

The Importance of Exfoliation

The best thing you can do to get a perfect spray tan is to exfoliate super well!  Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, revealing soft, smooth, fresh skin.  This is the perfect canvas for an even sunless tan, regardless of what kind of sunless tanning products you are using!

When you exfoliate before using sunless tanning products, you want to make sure you use an exfoliant that is oil free.  Some products that are too oily can leave behind a film on your skin, and actually barricade it from the spray tanning solution! You want to exfoliate before your sunless tan, and then not again until you are ready to start removing it.

How Sunless Tanning Got Started

Ever wonder how sunless tanning got started? It was a far cry from the sunless tanning products available today, but DHA was actually first recognized as a skin coloring agent in the 1920's! It was used during the x-ray process and doctors noted that it changed the color of the skin when spilled!

After that DHA was used for treating children with glycogen storage disease.  It was again noticed that when spilled, it changed the color of the skin.  A doctor experimented with this on her own skin, and after much trial and error developed the first sunless tanners.  Sunless tanning products sure have come a long way!

Exfoliation Methods

Good exfoliation is key to getting the most even tan and best wear out of your sunless tanning products. There are many different ways to exfoliate your skin.  All of which will remove dead skin cells and any product build up. Here are a couple methods to try!

Try using an exfoliation wash cloth or glove!  You can use these in the shower with baking soda, body wash, or any exfoliator of your choosing.  Gently rub your body with the cloth or glove to remove dead skin, rinse well afterwards. There are many exfoliating products available, and some are very simple to make yourself!  There are tons of recipes online to make your own.

Dry brushing is another excellent exfoliation method.  This takes a bit of patience, but yields amazing results and helps to increase circulation and re energize your skin. You use a natural bristle brush, brushing your skin in strokes towards your heart. You should always brush your skin towards your heart to avoid rupturing blood vessels.  Once you have fully dry brushed your entire body, hop in the shower and wash per usual. Keep in mind that products that contain oils can create a barrier between your skin and sunless tanning products.  If you choose to use something oily, remember to apply it a couple days before your tanning product.
