Choosing the Right Solution

There are so many different kinds of spray tanning solutions!  How can you possibly know what products to use on what clients?!

The answer to this is really simple.  Use the right DHA level for your clients skin type, and you will never be disappointed!  Light skinned people, who are very sun sensitive should use original shade solutions.  These have the lowest levels of DHA.  Dark solutions can be used on most people, light to dark skinned, who tan fairly well.  Extra dark spray tanning solutions are best for clients who already have dark skin.  Extra dark is also great for clients who tan very well, or who's skin is used to spray tanning.  Remember that using a higher DHA level does not always mean you client will be darker! Orange tones or off color development happen from spraying someone too light with too dark of a solution!

The Scoop on Prep Wipes

PH Balancing Prep Wipes are a great product to have available for your spray tanning clients!  They leave the skin totally ready for DHA tanning.  Using pH balancing sprays or wipes will increase the effectiveness of DHA tanning on the skin.

PH Balancing Prep Wipes exfoliate and lower the skins level of pH.  This will increase the brown tones in spray tanning.  They also cleanse and moisturize!  Prep wipes are great to have for any clients who simply did not have the time to properly prepare for their sunless tan!

Tips for a Great Looking Spray Tan

Preparing for your spray tan will make all the difference in the outcome.  Properly caring for your spray tan will lengthen its life, and keep you looking natural.  Here are a few tips for getting a great looking sunless tan!

Always exfoliate the day before your spray tan session.  Shave the day before as well!  Do not wear any lotions, perfumes, makeup, or deodorant the day of.  Products such as these can block the spray tan solution from your skin.  Wear loose fitting dark clothing home, if it looks like it might rain bring an umbrella!  You do not want to get wet for 8 hours.  Use a tan extender with DHA every other day to keep your sunless tan looking fresh!

To Prep Spray, or Not to Prep Spray

Many spray tanning techs mist their clients with a pH balancing prep spray before spraying them with spray tanning solutions.  Does using pH spray really make a difference in the quality of their sunless tan?

PH balancing prep sprays help to lower the pH levels in your skin.  This helps you to develop more brown tones from the DHA spray tanning solutions.  pH balancing prep sprays also moisturize and mildly exfoliate your skin!

Barrier Cream

Using DHA barrier cream is a great way to keep spray tan solutions from building up on your clients!  It works great for the nail beds, elbows, ankles, or anywhere your spray tanning clients may have dry skin!

You simply apply a thin layer of barrier cream anywhere you do not want to spray tan solutions to develop heavily.  Putting a slightly thicker layer of barrier cream on the nails, palms of the hands, and toe nails will keep solutions from developing there at all!! Simply wipe off barrier cream from clients palms and nails with a damp cloth after their spray tanning session!

Spray Tanning and Tattoos

Can you get a spray tan if you have tattoos?  Absolutely!  Spray tanning solutions may temporarily darken colors in tattoos, but this darkness goes away. 

The DHA in spray tanning solutions only effects the outermost layer of your skin.  Tattoos go many layers deeper.  If you are bothered by the temporary darkness you can use a small amount of barrier cream to cover your tattoo.  Be sure not to get the barrier cream anywhere you want your tan to take!

Touch Up Spray & Face Extender

My face is always what fades first after a spray tanning session.  That's why I always have a bottle of Kahuna Bay Touch Up Spray and Face Extender on hand. 

This product adds just the right amount of color to my face, keeping it as bronze as the rest of me.  It's also great for the hands, feet, or anywhere you need a little fix!  It has both instant bronzers and a spray tanning solution, so you have that initial glow, as well as the DHA tan! We always hear horror stories about DHA spray tan solutions smelling horribly.  This smell is a natural reaction the DHA has with your skin.

Sometimes it can be a little tricky to know what solutions to use. This is a simple guideline to help you choose which spray tan solutions work best with different skin tones.  SKIN TYPE COMMON PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS RECOMMENDED SPRAY TAN SOLUTIONS Type I Extremely sensitive to sun. Often light haired, fair skinned with freckles. Usually sunburns easily. Not likely to tan. ·          Original   Type II Very sensitive to sun. Often fair skinned and blue or light colored eyes. Usually sunburns easily. Able to achieve light tan. ·                 Original or Dark     Type III Sensitive to sun. Most Caucasians fit into this category. Sometimes sunburns. Achieves medium tan. ·          Dark       Type IV Moderately sensitive to sun. Often of Mediterranean, Hispanic or Asian descent. Sunburns a little. Usually tans well. ·                      Double Dark         *Booster Drops could be added to Darken Solution. ·         *Please remember, choosing a high DHA% thinking you will be darker does not always work. *Off color development (orange),rapid and uneven fading can result. Spray Tan Solution Storage Answers!

How do I store my spray tan solution?

-  Spray tan solution is actually really easy to store!  You want to keep your solutions in a cool, dry room out of direct light. This room should always be below 75°F.

Is there anything I need to do to my spray tan solution before spraying it?

- You should always blend your spray tan solution well.  You do not want to shake it as this could cause the sunless solution to bubble up.  Blend it as you would paint, holding the bottle in your hand rolling your wrist so the solution spins in the bottle. 

How long is spray tan solution good for?

-  Most standard spray tanning solutions have a shelf life of about 6 months.

My spray tan solution looks green?!

- This happens when a spray tanning solution goes bad or gets over heated.  The temporary bronzers become off colored.  Accidentally sprayed someone green?  Don't worry!  This color is just temporary and will wash off after showering.

Spray tan parties are a blast! Who wouldn't want an excuse to get together with their girlfriends, drink margaritas, gossip, and get a golden tan? Here's a few simple steps to throwing your own!

Cleaning Your Professional Spray Tan Gun

Here's a quick and easy how to for cleaning spray tan solutions from your HVLP spray tanning gun!

• Rinse out the solution cup
• Fill cup with 1 part airbrush cleaner and 2 parts warm water
• Spray through your tanning gun
• Remove solution cup and rinse out.
• Fill cup with clean water
• Spray water through spray tan gun to ensure cleaner is rinsed out
• Empty out solution cup and spray dry air through HVLP gun, this will help dry out the inside parts

It is not necessary to clean your gun with airbrush cleaner every time.  Airbrush cleaner however, will really help to clean out any sticky residue from spray tan solutions!
