Spray Tan After Care

With proper after care, you can get at least 10 days out of your sunless tan! Caring for your spray tan is super easy, and actually will improve your skin. Here's a few steps on how to care for your sunless glow!

First of all, avoid chlorine pools.  Chlorine will strip your sunless tan, causing it to fade at a much more rapid pace.  Moisturize at least twice a day. Keeping your skin moisturized will cause it to stay more supple, thus causing your skin to slough off slower.  Using a moisturizer that contains DHA every other day will help to add a bit of color, keeping your spray tan even, and fresh looking. Avoid products with mineral oils, petroleum, and waxes.  These can actually dry out your skin, and fade your tan!

Using Booster Drops

You may have noticed that you have the option of adding booster drops to any spray tanning solution order.  What are they anyway?  Well booster drops contain a high concentration of DHA.  DHA is the ingredient in sunless tanning products that causes your skin to have the tan color.  When you add booster drops to your solution, you increase the level of DHA, creating a darker tan.

Booster drops are available in different size bottles and come in both bronze and clear.  You only have to add 5 drops per 2 oz of spray tanning solution to increase the DHA level 1%.  It's a great way to be able to customize your spray tanning solutions to your clients skin type!  Remember, adding too much DHA can cause off coloring rather than a darker natural looking tan.  Be sure to know your clients skin type before boosting the sunless tanning solution!

Keep Your HVLP Gun Clean!

It is sooo easy to keep your HVLP spray tanning equipment clean!  Keeping it clean will ensure your HVLP gun is spraying at its best.  If your gun is spitting, or your spray tans are turning out splotchy and uneven, chances are your equipment needs a good cleaning!  Here is how we recommend cleaning your sunless tanning equipment.

First take the solution cup off of your HVLP gun and rinse it out.  Fill that solution cup about half way with your favorite airbrush/HVLP cleaner.  Spray the cleaning solution through your gun into a sink or bathtub.  Again remove the solution cup, rinse it out, and fill with warm water.  Spray this water through your spray tanning gun to make sure all the cleaning solution has been rinsed away.  Once you have done this go ahead and empty the cup again.  Spray air though your HVLP gun to help dry out the inner workings of it.  Now your spray tanning equipment is clean and ready to go!

Getting the best possible spray tan really is all about how you prep for it!  There are a few things you need to do at home, before your even walk foot in the door of your favorite sunless tanning salon.

Always, always, always exfoliate!  Exfoliate 3 or 4 hours before your sunless tanning appointment! This will ensure that you have a fresh new canvas of skin for the DHA in the spray tanning solution to take to. The days before your appointment, moisturize liberty!  Spray tanning solution takes best to well moisturized skin.   Be sure the day of your session, you have no moisturizers, deodorants, or make up on your skin.  These types of products can block the sunless solution from absorbing into your skin!

Removing a Sunless Tan

Sometimes, bad sunless tans happen.  Sometimes, we love spray tanning so much that we start to get a slight build up from layering on the solution.  So... what can we do about it?  There are a few simple ways to help slough off that spray tanning solution!

Try taking a dip in a pool or hot tub!  The chlorine along with the warm water will help your sunless tan to fade quickly.  Baking soda also does wonders!  Try taking a long soak in a hot bath with about a cup of baking soda in it.  The spray tanning solution will start to fall off!  Baby oil also works well.  Generously apply baby oil to your skin and allow it to soak in.  Then soak in a hot bath!

Hand Blending Solutions

Hand blending spray tanning solutions is a great way to get a more natural look for the hands and feet.  It also works well for fixing any little mess ups.  Such as when solution beads up on the chest.

All you need to hand blend spray tanning solutions is your spray tanning gun and a soft cloth.  You dampen the cloth with spray tanning solution.  For the hands, spray the hands as you normally would, then take the damp cloth and blend the solution into the creases of the fingers and up into the wrist.  You do the same for the feet, blending into the ankles.  For beading, just blend the beaded up solution into the skin, with the solution dampened cloth!

Using a pH balancing prep spray before spray tanning your clients can really make a difference in the results!  These sprays help to lower the pH level of your skin, which helps to make spray tanning solution the most effective.

You simply mist your clients with the pH balancing spray and allow it to dry before applying your favorite spray tan solution.  Using the prep spray will help the spray tan solution develop more brown tones and reduce the risk of any orange off coloring.  It also will help the spray tanning solution to go on smoothly and fade more evenly!

Mobile Tanning

Offering mobile spray tanning can be very profitable to your tanning company.  Essentially, mobile spray tanning is offering personal spray tans in someones home.  You bring your equipment, set up, and spray tan your clients in their own home!

These days people can be very busy, and simply not have the time to get out and get their favorite spray tan.  With mobile spray tanning, busy people can get great quality spray tans between meetings, or on their lunch break.  You simply bring your spray tanning equipment and a pop up tanning tent to spray your clients in.  Set up in their home, and get spraying!  Luggage on wheels can be great for pulling around your equipment and supplies!

Exfoliation Methods

Good exfoliation is key to getting the most even tan and best wear out of your sunless tanning products. There are many different ways to exfoliate your skin.  All of which will remove dead skin cells and any product build up. Here are a couple methods to try!

Try using an exfoliation wash cloth or glove!  You can use these in the shower with baking soda, body wash, or any exfoliator of your choosing.  Gently rub your body with the cloth or glove to remove dead skin, rinse well afterwards. There are many exfoliating products available, and some are very simple to make yourself!  There are tons of recipes online to make your own.

Dry brushing is another excellent exfoliation method.  This takes a bit of patience, but yields amazing results and helps to increase circulation and re energize your skin. You use a natural bristle brush, brushing your skin in strokes towards your heart. You should always brush your skin towards your heart to avoid rupturing blood vessels.  Once you have fully dry brushed your entire body, hop in the shower and wash per usual. Keep in mind that products that contain oils can create a barrier between your skin and sunless tanning products.  If you choose to use something oily, remember to apply it a couple days before your tanning product.
