Using Booster Drops

You may have noticed that you have the option of adding booster drops to any spray tanning solution order.  What are they anyway?  Well booster drops contain a high concentration of DHA.  DHA is the ingredient in sunless tanning products that causes your skin to have the tan color.  When you add booster drops to your solution, you increase the level of DHA, creating a darker tan.

Booster drops are available in different size bottles and come in both bronze and clear.  You only have to add 5 drops per 2 oz of spray tanning solution to increase the DHA level 1%.  It's a great way to be able to customize your spray tanning solutions to your clients skin type!  Remember, adding too much DHA can cause off coloring rather than a darker natural looking tan.  Be sure to know your clients skin type before boosting the sunless tanning solution!

Spray Tan Developing Time

Spray Tanning Solution with Bronzer

Getting your first sunless spray tan?  Many people are frightened when they see color running down the shower drain, but this is totally normal!  Most spray tanning solutions contain both a lasting DHA tan and an instant bronzer.  This bronzer acts as a guide for your spray tanning tech, and gives you an instant glow!

DHA typically takes 6-8 hours to develop into a sunless tan.  The temporary bronzer tends to get darker as your spray tanning solution is developing.  Because of this, you may appear super dark but don't panic and shower too soon!  The color you are underneath that bronzer is much more natural and beautiful looking, so be sure to let it develop!

Spray Tans Get Darker as They Develop?

Many people don't really realize how a spray tan works!  The color you see when you are first spray tanned, is not the color you will look in the end.  Spray tanning solutions take some time to develop into a week long lasting tan.. but why?

Spray tanning solutions aren't merely some stain or dye that soaks into your skin.  Spray tan solutions actually contain DHA which causes a reaction with the top layer of your skin.  The result of this reaction is gorgeous, glowing, tan colored skin! The color you initially see during your sunless spray tanning session is simply a cosmetic bronzer that is used as a guide for your spray tan tech.

Hand Blending Solutions

Hand blending spray tanning solutions is a great way to get a more natural look for the hands and feet.  It also works well for fixing any little mess ups.  Such as when solution beads up on the chest.

All you need to hand blend spray tanning solutions is your spray tanning gun and a soft cloth.  You dampen the cloth with spray tanning solution.  For the hands, spray the hands as you normally would, then take the damp cloth and blend the solution into the creases of the fingers and up into the wrist.  You do the same for the feet, blending into the ankles.  For beading, just blend the beaded up solution into the skin, with the solution dampened cloth!

When to Use Barrier Cream

Barrier cream can be a great tool for spray tanning!  It really can make your job as a spray tanning tech a lot easier!  Barrier cream will prevent sunless tanning solutions from developing in areas you don't want the tan to take.

Barrier cream is most typically used on the finger nails, toe nails, and palms of the hands.  It is also great for dry patches!  If you apply a thin layer of barrier cream to an area that is dry it will keep the sunless tanning solutions from over absorbing. You can also use it over tattoos to prevent temporary darkening of the colors!

Sunless Tanning Preparation

If you want great results from your sunless tanning solutions you have to prep your skin!  It is so important to take the proper steps to ensure your spray tan looks natural, and fades evenly.

Always exfoliate before applying sunless tanning solutions.  DHA only takes to the dead layer of your skin, so you want to get as much of the old skin off as possible.  That will make the tan more even, and help it to have the longest length possible. It is also important to moisturize the days before your sunless tan.  Spray tanning solution tends to over absorb in dry skin, so moisture is super important.  Also, the day of your tanning session, do not wear any makeup, deodorant, lotion or perfume.  These products can cause the solution to not take to your skin.

DHA Boost!

When using booster drops, be careful not to add too much concentration of DHA to your spray tanning solutions than what your skin can take.  If you use something too dark for you, it can create off colored orangy tones. DHA booster drops are all natural and available in clear or bronze!

Choosing the Right Solution

There are so many different kinds of spray tanning solutions!  How can you possibly know what products to use on what clients?!

The answer to this is really simple.  Use the right DHA level for your clients skin type, and you will never be disappointed!  Light skinned people, who are very sun sensitive should use original shade solutions.  These have the lowest levels of DHA.  Dark solutions can be used on most people, light to dark skinned, who tan fairly well.  Extra dark spray tanning solutions are best for clients who already have dark skin.  Extra dark is also great for clients who tan very well, or who's skin is used to spray tanning.  Remember that using a higher DHA level does not always mean you client will be darker! Orange tones or off color development happen from spraying someone too light with too dark of a solution!

The Scoop on Prep Wipes

PH Balancing Prep Wipes are a great product to have available for your spray tanning clients!  They leave the skin totally ready for DHA tanning.  Using pH balancing sprays or wipes will increase the effectiveness of DHA tanning on the skin.

PH Balancing Prep Wipes exfoliate and lower the skins level of pH.  This will increase the brown tones in spray tanning.  They also cleanse and moisturize!  Prep wipes are great to have for any clients who simply did not have the time to properly prepare for their sunless tan!

Tips for a Great Looking Spray Tan

Preparing for your spray tan will make all the difference in the outcome.  Properly caring for your spray tan will lengthen its life, and keep you looking natural.  Here are a few tips for getting a great looking sunless tan!

Always exfoliate the day before your spray tan session.  Shave the day before as well!  Do not wear any lotions, perfumes, makeup, or deodorant the day of.  Products such as these can block the spray tan solution from your skin.  Wear loose fitting dark clothing home, if it looks like it might rain bring an umbrella!  You do not want to get wet for 8 hours.  Use a tan extender with DHA every other day to keep your sunless tan looking fresh!

To Prep Spray, or Not to Prep Spray

Many spray tanning techs mist their clients with a pH balancing prep spray before spraying them with spray tanning solutions.  Does using pH spray really make a difference in the quality of their sunless tan?

PH balancing prep sprays help to lower the pH levels in your skin.  This helps you to develop more brown tones from the DHA spray tanning solutions.  pH balancing prep sprays also moisturize and mildly exfoliate your skin!

Barrier Cream

Using DHA barrier cream is a great way to keep spray tan solutions from building up on your clients!  It works great for the nail beds, elbows, ankles, or anywhere your spray tanning clients may have dry skin!

You simply apply a thin layer of barrier cream anywhere you do not want to spray tan solutions to develop heavily.  Putting a slightly thicker layer of barrier cream on the nails, palms of the hands, and toe nails will keep solutions from developing there at all!! Simply wipe off barrier cream from clients palms and nails with a damp cloth after their spray tanning session!

Spray Tanning and Tattoos

Can you get a spray tan if you have tattoos?  Absolutely!  Spray tanning solutions may temporarily darken colors in tattoos, but this darkness goes away. 

The DHA in spray tanning solutions only effects the outermost layer of your skin.  Tattoos go many layers deeper.  If you are bothered by the temporary darkness you can use a small amount of barrier cream to cover your tattoo.  Be sure not to get the barrier cream anywhere you want your tan to take!
